What is Double Cleansing?
The logic behind double cleansing is actually quite simple: Some of the impurities on our skin are oil-soluble, while others are water-soluble. Trying to clean everything with a single cleanser only spreads the impurities around and makes them stick to the surface. That is why we divide the process into two stages and perform our skin cleansing with the support of two different cleansers.
1-Oil-Based Cleanser (Oil dissolves oil)
2-Water-Based Cleanser (Water cleanses water-based residue)
Why Is It Important?
Double cleansing is not just a trend; it is a skincare approach that must be applied for clean and healthy skin. A proper cleansing routine plays a key role in preventing skin problems and ensuring maximum benefit from other skincare products. It is especially important for those who wear makeup regularly, use sunscreen, and experience skin problems (acne, blackheads, clogged pores, etc.).
Throughout the day, our skin is exposed to makeup, sunscreen, cosmetic products, and environmental pollutants. A one-step cleansing is often not enough to remove these residues completely. For this reason, double cleansing allows you to achieve a deep and effective result, as if you had received a professional facial, in the comfort of your own home.
How to Perform Double Cleansing?
Stage 1: Magnet Effect with Oil-Based Cleanser
The main goal of oil-based cleansers is the residue left by cosmetic products that penetrate into the skin pores and contain oil.
What Does an Oil-Based Cleanser Remove? It attracts and dissolves sunscreen that remains on the skin throughout the day, foundation, BB cream, waterproof makeup, and the oil (sebum) your skin produces and excretes through perspiration, acting like a magnet.
Result: The hardened residues inside the pores soften. Therefore, the first stage of cleansing is critical for the easy dissolution and removal of impurities accumulated on the skin.
Stage 2: Water-Based Cleansing (Foaming and Purifying)
After rinsing off the impurities dissolved with oil, the face is washed with a water-based cleanser, such as the IKAGLAIE Cleansing Foam.
What Does It Remove? It completely washes away the natural oil (sebum), dirt, and any remaining residue from the first stage.
Result: No residue is left on the skin, pores are completely cleared, and your skin can finally "breathe a sigh of relief."
Thanks to this second step, the skin is refreshed without feeling dry or tight, and it becomes ready for other skincare products.
Benefits of Double Cleansing for the Skin
Adopting the double cleansing methodology in your skincare routine provides several critical advantages for the dermis and epidermis layers. It is not just a cleansing routine for your skin, but an investment in its health.
Here are 5 key benefits of double cleansing.
1. Deep Purification - Total Elimination of Lipophilic Pollutants
Sunscreen filters, silicone-based makeup, and environmental air pollution particles have "hydrophobic" (water-repelling) properties. One-step (water-based only) cleansers cannot fully remove these particles from the surface. Double cleansing binds these residues, purifying the skin at a microscopic level.
2. Pore Detox - Pore Health and Comedone Prevention
The primary cause of blackheads and closed comedones is the accumulation of oxidized sebum and keratin debris in the pore channels. The oil-based first step emulsifies and dissolves these deposits within the follicles. This process prevents pores from enlarging and optimizes the skin's texture.
3. Maximum Efficacy - Increasing Absorption Capacity of Active Ingredients
An unclean skin surface acts as a physical barrier for topically applied serums and moisturizers. Skin that has been completely purified through the double-cleansing method maximizes the bioavailability (absorption power) of products with active ingredients, such as the IKAGLAIE Mineral Cocktail, thereby ensuring maximum efficiency from the products.
4. Preserving Skin Age - Protecting the Skin Barrier (Stratum Corneum)
Aggressive surfactants used to clean the skin in one go can disrupt the skin's natural oil balance and lead to "trans-epidermal water loss" (TEWL). The double-cleansing method, however, preserves the lipid barrier by cleaning the skin gently without abrasion, minimizes the risk of irritation, and supports the skin's moisture-retention capacity.
5. Natural Balance – Oxidative Stress & Anti-Aging Effect
Pollution particles remaining on the skin throughout the day trigger free radical production. This leads to collagen breakdown and signs of premature aging (fine lines, dullness). A deep cleaning applied every evening removes this oxidative load from the skin, preparing a healthy foundation for the cellular renewal process (cell turnover).
Which Skin Types Can Use It?
All skin types can use it. The important thing is to choose a product suitable for your skin type that is alcohol-free and does not irritate the skin.
When and How Often Should Double Cleansing Be Done?
The ideal time to get maximum benefit from the double cleansing methodology is the evening routine. It is especially recommended for the nighttime skincare routine. It ensures the complete removal of makeup, sebum, and dirt caused by environmental factors accumulated on the skin throughout the day. In the mornings, cleaning the skin in one step with a gentle, water-based cleanser that does not strain the skin will be sufficient.
1. Why Should It Be Done in the Evening?
Lipophilic (oil-based) substances that accumulate on the skin surface throughout the day and cannot be removed with water-based cleansers reach their highest density in the evening.
Sunscreen Residues: SPF filters applied in the morning cling to the skin until evening.
Environmental Pollution: Exhaust fumes, dust, and heavy metal particles combine with sebum and stick to the skin.
Makeup: Pigments that settle into pores must be completely removed during the evening cleaning.
2. Is It Necessary in the Morning Routine?
As a general rule, double cleansing is not mandatory in the mornings. It is sufficient to cleanse the skin of sebum produced overnight with just a water-based cleanser. However, it can also be applied in the morning in the following two cases:
If you have a very oily skin structure and wake up with excessive sebum secretion, or if a very heavy and oil-based mask/skincare product was used in the night routine.
3. How Often Should It Be Applied?
To protect the health of the skin barrier, it is recommended to double cleanse only once a day (in the evenings). Over-cleansing the skin can cause the protective lipid layer to weaken.
How to Choose the Right Product for Double Cleansing?
For an effective purification process, the quality of the formulation and its compatibility with the skin's biological structure must be the priority when choosing products.
Choosing Phase 1 (Oil-Based Cleanser)
When choosing a product for the first stage, the "non-comedogenic" feature is the most important criterion.
Emulsification Ability: The chosen oil should be able to turn into a milky form (emulsion) the moment it comes into contact with water. This ensures that the oil is easily rinsed off without leaving any residue on the skin.
Natural and Valuable Oils: Instead of mineral oils, vegetable oils that nourish the skin, do not clog pores (non-comedogenic), and have high antioxidant capacity should be preferred.
Perfume and Alcohol Content: To avoid irritating the skin barrier, the formula should be free of synthetic perfumes and drying alcohols.
Choosing Phase 2 (Water-Based Cleanser)
The second stage should hydrate the skin while cleansing the residue from the first stage.
pH Balance: An ideal cleanser should have a pH of around 5.5, consistent with the skin's natural acidic structure. High-pH (basic) soap-based cleansers disrupt the skin flora.
Gentle Surfactants: Foams or gels formulated with gentle surfactants that clean without stripping the skin and do not contain SLS/SLES should be preferred.
Supporting Ingredients: Humectants (Panthenol, Glycerin) or soothing agents in the formula prevent the feeling of tightness that may occur after cleansing.
IKAGLAIE NOTE
When choosing products, it is important to listen to your skin's needs for that day. The most accurate approach is to keep the duration of the first phase longer on days with heavy makeup or heavy sunscreen usage, and to turn to more soothing formulas in the second phase on days when you feel sensitivity.
Double Cleansing: Common Misconceptions
1. Oily Skin Should Not Use Oil-Based Cleansers
The truth: On the contrary, following the "like dissolves like" rule, excess sebum (skin oil) that clogs pores is best cleaned by another oil. A properly formulated cleansing oil helps prevent acne formation.
2. Oil-Based Cleanser Leaves Residue and an Oily Feeling on the Skin
The truth: A high-quality cleansing oil emulsifies (turns into a milky structure) as soon as it comes into contact with water and is completely removed from the skin. The subsequent water-based cleanser leaves no film behind.
3. I Don't Wear Makeup, Is Double Cleansing Necessary?
The truth: Even if you don't wear makeup, you cannot completely dissolve sunscreens used throughout the day and harmful particles that stick to your skin from the air with just water. For deep cleansing, it is recommended to perform double cleansing regularly every evening.
4. This Method Dries Out the Skin and Weakens the Barrier
The truth: Double cleansing is much gentler than using a single, very strong, and drying cleanser. It aims to purify only "foreign" substances without disrupting the skin's moisture balance.
5. Washing the Face Twice Causes Premature Aging
The truth: On the contrary, not fully cleaning the skin of dirt and pollution leads to free radical damage and collagen breakdown. Proper cleansing is the most important anti-aging step that supports the skin's self-renewal process.
IKAGLAIE NOTE
The shortest path to skin care is cleaning the skin correctly and deeply. Do not strain your skin with incorrect practices; follow the scientific methodology.
